Welcome

  Dear colleagues and friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the site of our Society.
The Latin name “Mediterranean”, as well as the older Greek name “Mesogeios”, means “in the midst of land” and it indicates that the Mediterranean Sea is located between the landmasses of Europe, Asia and Africa. It has been the great unifier and link of cultures from Africa, the Middle East and Europe, as well as Central Asia via the Black Sea. Medicine has a long history in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The first doctor known to history was Sekhet-eanach who “healed the pharaoh’s nostrils” in ancient Egypt. Although much of Egyptian medicine relied on magic, Egyptians did have some knowledge of anatomy from making mummies. They also knew that honey helped to prevent wounds becoming infected.
The roots of modern medicine are in ancient Greece. Hippocrates, the most famous Greek doctor (460-377 BC) stressed that doctors should carefully observe the patients’ symptoms and take note of them. He rejected all magic and he believed in herbal remedies. Medical schools were formed in Greece and in Greek colonies around the Mediterranean. Later in Roman times Galen (130-200 AD) became a famous doctor. In the first century BC a Roman named Varro suggested that tiny animals caused disease. They were carried through the air and entered the body through the nose or the mouth. Mediterranean remains a unique area, serving as a giant mixing bowl of cultures. There are several infectious diseases like Brucellosis, Leismaniasis and Echinococcosis, which are more common in this area.
Thus, the Mediterranean Society of Chemotherapy was founded in 1976 at Catania Sicily. In the past, it organized large international congresses, but in recent years it seemed that interest had diminished. Our aim is to revive the Society in a way which will be useful to all countries involved. Instead of targeting the international medical community, we plan to hold smaller meetings, addressing the local problems of each country in the field of Antimicrobial and Anticancer Chemotherapy, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology.
The presentation of the activities of MSC and all affiliated societies, of the congresses and other scientific meetings related to the aims of our Society are the main purposes of this site.
Our site aspires to being continuously updated. We are waiting for your comments and ideas as well as your suggestions for its improvement.
